THE KNOW GLOBE

“In a time when every single cliché and catch phrase regarding the climate crisis has exhausted itself and no longer has any impact whatsoever, I find myself with quite the conundrum: Do we isolate/live in bubbles to protect our own sanity, or are we, in a roundabout way, protecting mother nature herself from our impact?”

- Hamilton

Living in a small village in the beautiful Overberg region of South Africa is complete bliss for Hamilton, but also highlights these issues as he experiences firsthand not only the beauty of nature, but also its incredible power. “Sometimes it is like placing a glass dome over an electric storm,” he says, “fleeting yet predictable, like the

prevailing winds of summer, the cold bite of winter, the rich autumn carpet and the very first buds of spring. If you try to trap it, it will die and we are often left with the feeling that nature rages on without us … but alas the clichés tell us differently, and we definitely should pay more attention.”

While reaching the ”tipping point” of “unprecedented”, “catastrophic”, “emotional trauma” and “extreme” feelings of isolation, fortunately we can also experience calm nurturing and the unbelievably incredible beauty and power of mother nature with her brushstroke sunsets, her aloe orange, her deep-electric forest green and her awe-inspiring beauty. This duality of trappings is the core theme of this new series of work by Hamilton.

This collection of paintings will be exhibited at Muddy Waters in Napier as part of the first “Napier Collective” trio of solo exhibitions. The art collective includes Nastasha Minyon-Sale, Jason Wyness and Alex Hamilton, and was formed to further the creative camaraderie and exchange of ideas in this small Overberg village.
